THE PROJECT
The Redefine Beauty campaign seeks to create a visually compelling story highlighting the eurocentric beauty standards that have been weaponized against Black/African American women. I utilized photography, creative direction, and design to execute the project.
THE PROCESS
This project was inspired by a piece I created earlier in my artistic career entitled "Blinded by Beauty." In hopes of bringing this piece to life, I chose demeaning comments that I have seen and heard directed towards Black/African American women about their physical appearance that would be used throughout the project. Following this, I captured some photos a few of the most beautiful women I know who possess some of these features deemed socially “undesirable.” Finally, I sought to challenge beauty ideals by juxtaposing the women’s faces against the disparaging comments directed toward Black/African American women on a daily basis and obscuring their faces in some photos to demonstrate the harm of these ideas.
THE PRODUCT
Redefine Beauty encourages Black/African American women to embrace the features that make them unique and others to consider the implications of the beauty standards which we as a society have widely accepted.
